Message From Tournament Chairman
Hello MGC members, this is Tom DeMasi your Tournament Chairperson. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone back to the Montlake Golf Club with a special welcome to all the new members who have joined us this year.
The Committee and I have selected the tournament formats and dates for this year and have them in the news letter and on the MGC website. Here are some explanations and general rules of the formats we will be playing this year. Most of us have seen these rules before so it’s not new to us but some have not, plus, now they are on our web page to refer to at any time. If you see discrepancies or have questions about what is stated here please contact me at t.demasi@comcast.net.
A few general rules that apply to all our competitions:
• First and foremost Have Fun and strive to make our events fun for everyone.
• For courtesy to the Pro Shop and all the participants everyone needs to check in 30 minutes prior to the posted start time
• USGA rules apply except where they are modified by the local rules. Everyone should carry a copy of the local rules in their golf bag to refer to. The Pro Shop and MGC committee members have
copies.
• If a question about a rule arises, play the ball out through the hole or play a second ball per Rule 3.3 and the dispute will be settled by the Pro or the Committee.
The most misunderstood local Rule is the “crossing the road Rule”. The Rule states: Out-of-bounds is defined by asphalt roads (Roads, not asphalt cart paths), white stakes, and boundary fences. This means a ball ON THE ROAD or OVER THE ROAD is out of bounds. EXCEPTION: Crossing the road directly in front of #4 tee box to #4 green or where marked by a white line. This means a ball on the road is OB no matter what side it is on!!

See Tournament Schedule, Formats and Entry Form Below.
Competition Formats
Singles Competition
• USGA stroke play Rules apply.
• Low Gross and Low Net prizes
• Full Handicaps are used and subtracted from the total Gross score = finish Net score
2 Person Stroke Play
• 2 person teams are created
• Stroke play Rules apply
• Teams combined Gross score is the team Gross score.
• Teams combined Net score is the team Net score.
4-Person Scramble
• All members of a team hit their drives off the tee and the best ball is selected. Then all members hit from that location, continuing until the ball is in the hole.
• It’s suggested a team captain be selected to decide which ball is to be played
• Play with in one club length of the selected ball, no closer to the hole. Putt all putts within one putter head of the selected ball, no closer to the hole.
• Do not tap in until all players have putted, once the ball is holed that score is official.
• Each member must use 2 drives and 2 second shots for the round.
• The condition of the lie of the ball selected must be maintained by all players. If the ball selected is in the Rough, all balls are played from the rough. If the ball is in a Hazard, all balls are played from the hazard etc.
• Mark your score card with a D for Drives and a 2 for second shots next to the players name used.
• The team Handicap will be 10% of the team members combined handicaps.
2 Person Scramble
• All the above Rules apply EXCEPT, use 2 drives and 2 second shots per nine holes played.
• The team Handicap will be 30% of the team members combined handicaps.
4 Person Best Ball
• Four person teams are created. Team Rules of golf apply. Refer to the USGA Rules book. Each team member plays their own ball throughout the course of play.
• The teams official score card will have all the players strokes given to them marked with a dot based on their handicap on every hole it applies. Example: If you are a 10 handicap you will get a stroke (marked with a “dot”) on the 10 hardest holes, holes rated 1 thru 10.
• Once a hole is completed the lowest NET score of the 4 players will be recorded as the “Team” score. NET score is the GROSS score minus the strokes given = net score.
2 Person Better Ball
• Two person teams are created.
• All the above rules apply.
6-6-6
• Two person teams are created.
• The first 6 holes (1 thru 6) are played as Better Ball. 2 person Better Ball rules apply
• The next 6 holes (7 thru 12) are played as Modified Chapman (Alternating Shots) (or Sorry Partner!). Both players will tee off. The team then decides which ball is to be played. The player whose ball is not selected after teeing off hits the second shot and the team plays that ONE BALL alternating their shots through the completion of the hole.
• The last 6 holes (13 thru 18) are played as a Scramble. 2 person Scramble Rules apply Except there are no shot requirements.
• A maximum of 8 strokes difference in handicaps between partners. Higher handicaps will be adjusted down to meet this requirement.
• The team handicap will be 25% of the team members combined handicap.
Stableford
• Stroke play, following the USGA Rules on stroke play, with points awarded in relation to a fixed score.
• The object of Stableford is to earn as many points possible
• Using Par as the fixed score the points are awarded as follows:
Double Bogey or higher = 0 points Birdie = 3 points
Bogey = 1 point Eagle = 4 points
Par = 2 points Albatross = 5 points
• Any variation of the above scoring is called a Modified Stableford.
• Each players score card will be marked with a dot for strokes given to them based on their handicap. Example: If you are a 10 handicap your will be given one stroke on the 10 hardest holes, holes rated 1 thru 10.
• When marking your score card, first record your GROSS score, then subtract any strokes given to you to get your NET score. Your NET score is the score used to earn your points. Record the points you earned, based on your NET score, as your Stableford score. Example: Hole number 5 is a par 4. Your gross score on that hole is 5. Your handicap gives you 2 strokes on that hole netting you a 3. A 3 on that hole is a Birdie. Birdie = 3 points!
Four-Ball Match Play
• A team of two players are created and play their better ball against another team of two players
• A maximum of 8 strokes difference in handicaps between partners. The higher handicap team member will adjust
down to meet this requirement.
• The match between the two teams will be handicapped off the player with the lowest handicap. That player will get 0
strokes and the other 3 players will get strokes based on the difference between their handicaps.
Example:
Team 1 Match Hcp. Team 2
Match Hcp.
Player A is a 10 4 Player A is a 6

0
Player B is a 16 10 Player B is a 19
Difference

6 (0K) Difference

13 (above 8 stroke max. - not OK
Player B adjusts to down to

14 (player A + 8 stroke max. =14)
Team 2 has the low handicap player at a 6. He gets 0 strokes. His partner has an adjusted down handicap of 14, he gets 8 strokes (14 minus 6 = 8). Team 1, Player A gets 4 strokes in the match (10 minus 6 = 4) and Player B gets 10 strokes (16 minus 6 = 10)
The Committee is going to add this Tournament to our schedule. A lot of clubs play this format and it is a lot of fun. My wish for all of you is to have fun and good luck!
